But this shouldn't be an issue with Netflix, which has made its growing international catalog and presence a point of pride: Only 35 percent of Netflix customers live in the U.S. Horrible subtitles are also a familiar problem for fans of foreign language films and anime - in fact, some fandoms crowdsource amateur subtitles for untranslated or badly translated shows. NAD was forced to again complain to Netflix, which was "omitting swear words that were not bleeped out in the audio track and deleting whole sentences" in the provided captions of Queer Eye, The Hollywood Reporter wrote. By 2018, the problems hadn't gotten noticeably better. But "by and large, closed captions on Netflix's instant streaming service are loaded with nonsense characters, transcription errors, and dialogue so implausible that it's hard to believe they're actually transcription errors," Jon Christian wrote at the time for The Week. In 2012, Netflix finally agreed to put captions on 100 percent of its library after being sued by the National Association for the Deaf (NAD) for noncompliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. These might seem like edge cases, but any conversation about subtitles on Netflix has to include accessibility advocates, who've been sounding the alarm about the streamer's sloppy captions for years. Or what about the 36 million deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers in America, whose Netflix accounts might be set to play the English CC version by default? But does it make much difference? If the English dub botches the translation, visually impaired fans miss out on the nuances of the script. Choose the “Ease of Access” submenu from the list and then adjust the “Closed Captioning” toggle to “Off.Youngmi's analysis drew some backlash as others pointed out that the translation she was critiquing was Netflix's English closed caption option ( which translates the English dub), not the official English subtitles, which were more accurate. There is currently no federal law banning the creation of deepfake pornography, though the US government does outlaw generation of these kinds of images of minors. Many victims never find out about the images, but even those who do may struggle to get law enforcement to investigate or to find funds to pursue legal action, Galperin said. “You see it among high school children and people who are in college.” “We are seeing more and more of this being done by ordinary people with ordinary targets,” said Eva Galperin, director of cybersecurity at the Electronic Frontier Foundation. Non-consensual pornography of public figures has long been a scourge of the internet, but privacy experts are growing concerned that advances in AI technology have made deepfake software easier and more effective. Describing one of the undressing apps, he said, “If you take them at their word, their website advertises that it has more than a thousand users per day.” “They are doing a lot of business,” Lakatos said. In addition to the rise in traffic, the services, some of which charge $9.99 a month, claim on their websites that they are attracting a lot of customers. We’ve reviewed the ads in question and are removing those that violate our policies.” Neither X nor Reddit responded to requests for comment. Because they are open source, the models that the app developers use are available for free.Ī Google spokesperson said the company doesn’t allow ads “that contain sexually explicit content. The rise in popularity corresponds to the release of several open source diffusion models, or artificial intelligence that can create images that are far superior to those created just a few years ago, Graphika said. Its proliferation runs into serious legal and ethical hurdles, as the images are often taken from social media and distributed without the consent, control or knowledge of the subject. These apps are part of a worrying trend of non-consensual pornography being developed and distributed because of advances in artificial intelligence - a type of fabricated media known as deepfake pornography. The services use AI to recreate an image so that the person is nude. For instance, since the beginning of this year, the number of links advertising undressing apps increased more than 2,400% on social media, including on X and Reddit, the researchers said. Many of these undressing, or “nudify,” services use popular social networks for marketing, according to Graphika. At up to $749, it's more expensive than the Asus, but the Mini-Note still comes at less than half the price of most Windows ultraportables out there. Eee as I type, those flaws of confinement make Hewlett-Packard's Mini-Note 2133 laptop look pretty appealing. I've used it a good deal since (as have the thousands flocking to buy it), but even the Goliath-beating Asus can be frustrating: The keyboard is usable but a bit cramped, and the little guy comes pre-loaded with applications that are fine as far as they go-but it doesn't run standard software. version of Asus' Eee PC, and found it a solid Web-and-email tool-at a pretty affordable price. So while I've already tested some of the latest tablets for PM, now I'm fully invested in the new form-factor craze spreading through Gadget Land: mini-laptops.Īfter drooling over it at CES earlier this year, I got my hands on the tiny, 7-in. If carefree Web access is an important factor, you'll be better off buying an Eee PC in one of its 'Surf' variants.Trying to keep up my blog while grading finals means I need a serious to-go computer. It lacks any sort of integrated 3G/HSDPA Web access, however, so you need to be within spitting distance of an open Wi-Fi hotspot in order to access the Internet. We've mentioned the 2133 comes with 802.11a/b/g Wi-Fi, which is great. This particular feature makes the 2133 a less desirable machine for children and the chronically clumsy. These provide ample storage but they aren't as sturdy as their solid-state counterparts in the event of a fall. While the Americans can choose between 120GB or 160GB 1.8-inch drives, or a 4GB solid-state drive, us Brits are only permitted the 120GB mechanical disk. UK buyers don't get much choice in terms of storage, either. It's worth noting that, alongside the 1.2GHz chip, American customers get to choose from a 1GHz C7-M, or the slightly faster 1.6GHz C7-M, which leads us to believe HP has something against the British. The Vista model gets 2GB of RAM - 128MB of which is allocated to the graphics card, while the Linux model uses 1GB. They both use a CPU that's the computing equivalent of a lame horse - a 1.2GHz VIA C7-M. The Vista and Linux versions have similar specifications. You get ExpressCard and SD Card readers on the machine's left side It's also possible to find versions of the 2133 with Windows XP on sale at selected retailers. You'll find two main versions of the 2133 on sale: one that uses SuSE Linux, and one that uses Windows Vista Business edition. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are standard equipment. At the front, you'll find sliding switches for the power and wireless adaptors. The right side is home to Ethernet, a second USB port and ExpressCard and SD card readers. On the left, there's a D-Sub VGA port, a USB port and mic and headphone jacks. In fact, the smallness of the screen and the largeness of the keyboard make the whole thing look out of proportion - like it's made up of two halves of different laptops.Ĭonnectivity is adequate. Unfortunately, the bezel, which houses the integrated speakers, is quite large, meaning the 2133's screen appears smaller than it is. Still, it takes the upper hand by running at a native resolution of 1,280x768 pixels. The 2133's display measures 8.9 inches diagonally, so it's the same size as the Eee PC 900. This arrangement takes some time getting used to and we can't help but thinking HP should have also provided a nipple-style mouse as seen on many IBM laptops. Instead of sitting below it, they're located on the left and right of the trackpad. The selector buttons are also a pain - and they're in the wrong place. The trackpad is extremely shallow, which means you'll need more vertical finger strokes than you would on a standard trackpad. HP says the keyboard is 92 per cent of the size of a 'standard' laptop keyboard, but we'd say many of the keys are actually larger, and more comfortable than what you get on some bigger laptops.Īlthough HP gets it right with the keyboard, it doesn't follow suit with the mouse. This stretches all the way to the left and right edges of the chassis, allowing the keys to be significantly larger than those on the Eee PC. While it's far from cumbersome, it's definitely eaten a few more pies than its Asus rival.īy making the 2133 bigger, HP has been able to incorporate a relatively large, spill-proof keyboard. It's also approximately 300g heavier at 1.3kg. The 2133 measures 165 by 33 by 255mm, making it slightly wider than an Eee PC. The keys are actually usable by non-dwarves! This a victory for common sense

To change settings on the Session without the app, users need to use the small button and the recording button to skip and select various options. It has a built-in battery and the USB Type-C port and microSD slot can be found on the right behind a flap.Ī very small monochrome display is positioned on the top of the Session behind the large recording button, while a small button on the rear offers access to settings, which consequently appear on the screen. The GoPro Hero5 Session is smaller and more subtle than the Hero5 Black, perhaps making it more appealing to those who want to mount it on a helmet or elsewhere on themselves. The large recording button sits on the top. The removable battery and microSD card slot are hidden in the bottom, while the USB type-C port and micro HDMI port are hidden behind a flap on the right. The camera lens is positioned next to a small monochrome LCD display on the front, while a two-inch built-in touchscreen display sits on the rear, offering easy control of settings, such as resolution and field of view (FOV). The GoPro Hero5 Black is the larger of the two action cameras being compared here. Hero5 Session is smaller and more subtle.Hero5 Black has a touchscreen for easier control.GoPro Hero5 Black vs Hero5 Session: Design I've got some of Arturia's other analogue synth plugins running in the same concert but it's only ever the prophet that behaves like this. The prophet will always change itself to the same program every time I repeat the experiment on the same patch, but interestingly for each different mainstage patch it selects a different program to use as its favourite. This happens with lots of different mainstage patches within my concert. So when I come back to my original patch (Skin Deep Split) the prophet will be playing the wrong sound even though the minimoog on the other channel strip is fine.Īfter this point no amount of program change messages will alter the prophet program - it stays on the same wrong one. I can even watch this happening by having the prophet's editor screen open. Now if I send a program change message from my Nord Lead in order to change the mainstage patch then the patch changes as expected but in addition the prophet plugin on the patch that I've just come from gets changed to a different program, in this case one called 'Spindown' (named after another song). The prophet is set on a program (preset?) that i've called LowSkinDeep. There are two channel strips in the patch, one running Arturia's Minimoog and the other running the problematic Prophet plugin. I have a mainstage patch called Skin Deep Split cos the tune is called Skin Deep and I've split the keyboard. Let me give you an example of what my problem is. The sampler instrument idea would be tough in this case as I'm playing quite involved parts with a live band. Firstly thanks to everyone for your replies - glad I'm not trying to solve this on my own any more. |
